Our journey home. while quite tiring, was mainly uneventful. We left the apartment in Aguilas at about 5.15am, Thursday December 2nd. a little earlier than planned, but we both woke about 4.30, and neither of us could get back to sleep, so we decided to get up and go. The temperature in Aguilas was 12c as we drove away, heading towards Madrid, and Santander. However the temperature plummeted as we drove north, and once it hit 0 c, that was where it stayed. We arrived in Santander at exactly 2.15pm, taking us just 9 hours to drive the 615 miles. We had one stop for diesel, and another to eat our sandwiches that Jane had prepared the night before. We got parked at the ferry terminal, when suddenly we had a huge hail storm, which lasted some 20 minuets. leaving the whole area covered in white ice.
The ferry takes 23 hours to get to Plymouth, and was not due to arrive until 6pm the following night. We had a cabin, nothing to write home about, but was comfortable enough. The crossing was smooth and uneventful and we arrived one hour ahead of schedule, at 5pm. on Friday.
Of course that meant we arrived in Plymouth right in the middle of the evening rush hour, but once we were away from the city, the drive up the M5 was without incident, and we were home by 8.45pm. Genette had been in and turned on the heating, so it was nice and cozy, despite the sub-zero temperature outside.
